Why Is the Confederate Flag So Popular?

by Robert Cooksey

Most of us recognize the battle flag of the Confederacy as a symbol of the south. This flag, also referred to as the Southern Cross, has some pretty strong associations for most people. Some of them are positive, but others are negative - it all depends on what you think of when you see this flag. Some people have associations with their regional heritage, and are very proud of the Confederate flag. However, for a lot of other people, this is a symbol of slavery, institutionalized racism, and restrictive blue laws that were a big part of the south’s history. Add to that the fact that more than five hundred racist organizations use this flag as a symbol and you have a complicated situation.

There’s a common misperception that the battle flag was also the national flag. The truth is that it wasn’t even the primary battle flag. What we currently recognize as the Confederate flag is actually one of about a hundred and eighty different flags carried into battle on the southern side during the Civil War. Not only that, but the national flag of the confederacy changed several times, too. There were three different flags used by the Confederacy during this period. Some of the Confederate flags looked like the familiar Southern Cross. Others bore very little resemblance to it.

Display of the Confederate flag is a highly controversial issue for many people - it’s hard to get anyone to agree on exactly what it stands for. When flown, some will see it as an overt form of support for the organizations and racist practices that dominated the south for much of its history. However, other people will see the same flag as a sign of regional pride and acknowledgment of their past. Some, mostly outside the US, even use it as a general symbol of rebellion, divorced from the Civil War entirely.

That’s what makes displaying the flag as part of a state flag, at a sporting event, or on a public building a big deal. The Confederate battle flag can mean a lot to people, and it can also be seen as an attack. Southern state legislatures have struggled with this issue for nearly twenty years.

Many of these states still display the Confederate flag in particular locations or on certain occasions. It’s important to remember that just putting up the Confederate flag doesn’t mean a person is making a racist statement. The issue is a lot more complicated than that.

The Confederate flag is a proud symbol of the south. However, the fact that it’s used by the Klan and other extreme racist organizations mean that it’ll automatically have some other associations. If you want to display this flag, think about the implications, and be willing to explain calmly what it means to you.

There’s a long history behind the Confederate flag, and it’s a point of pride for lots of people. That makes it a bad idea to dismiss it as merely a symbol of racism. This flag means a great deal to a large number of people. However, you should remember that there are lots of negative associations that go with this flag. No matter how you feel about it, everyone has a strong reaction.

The Confederate flag’s history is long, and it’s stayed popular for a long time. This flag is looked on as a sign of pride by many people, meaning that it shouldn’t just be dismissed as a racist symbol. However, it’s also not possible to ignore the negative associations. Almost everyone has a strong reaction to the Confederate flag.
