Viral Marketing Examples, What is it and How Does Viral Marketing Work?

by Mathew S. Robar on March 24, 2009

What is this term Viral we have been hearing so much about? It sounds bad? What is a Viral video? We will cover these and other questions in this article. We will also go through a real live example of how a viral video can spread.

So I will paraphrase a definition from wikipedia here. “Viral marketing and viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce increases in brand awareness or to achieve other marketing objectives (such as product sales) through self replicating viral processes, similar to the spread of pathological and/or computer viruses.”

Long story short it is a way to use the already established media channels as a means of distributing your message. Just genius.

Ok, so now that we have the definition out of the way, why is a chubby kid singing a song in a high voice considered a viral video? Well because of the way it is spread. Lets take that chubby kid for example. Lets call him Brian in this example.

It goes like this. Brian uploads to Youtube. Bethany posts Brian’s video on her Myspace. All her friends see her myspace and post it on theirs and the virus begins to spread.

Replicate this process with the other social media giants like facebook and twitter and you have yourself an outbreak on your hands. It can even be furthered on blogs, with email chains and with social bookmarking.

So can you make any money with this info? Well lets just say if you do it right, like Frank Kern for example, you can make about 3 million in a day like he does. Or even a few hundred would be cool to most!

Others may be coming up with a system to get the video of them dancing to Beyonce out to the masses. Bring it on.

Hopefully this article helped give you some ideas. Now go out there and make it happen.
