Understanding Social Anxiety Or Social Phobia

Can you recall the time of meeting your boss for the first time? Or having your supervisor check your every move while you work, both of these can be stressful. Perhaps the thought of going to the beach and expose your not-so-perfect body gives you an uncomfortable feeling, making you worry of how people will perceive you and what they might think and say about you.

Going through these feelings of anxiety can be normal for people. Provided there is a justifiable reason for feeling the anxiety over such things, experiencing it is simply atypical. However, sometimes the anxiety becomes too overwhelming and cause you to feel anxious on how people perceive you, what they might say, think or do, although you are aware of it being irrational. The bad part of it is that it can be hard to keep the anxiety under control, and this often results to social anxiety or social phobia.

At this moment, largely people around the world are often affected with social anxiety or social phobia. Most people that have this condition rather like to be alone, cornered and away from people. the dread of being not accepted in one way or another often results to them being loners. Even when they are with people they have close ties with, they can still feel overwhelmed, believing themselves to being criticized and/or watched. This is the main cause of their aversion to people and certain situations.

A person who suffers from social anxiety and social phobia are often misdiagnosed and are commonly labeled as schizophrenic and manic-depressive, among other detrimental misdiagnoses. Because only a few people suffering from social anxiety have heard of their condition and have never understood it due to its lack of exposure to any media, they believe they are alone in the world experiencing the disturbing symptoms. This can result to patients keeping the symptoms to themselves due to fear of being misjudged. Lacking important information, education and proper treatment, social anxiety or social phobia can impair their lives.

Furthermore, once a person experiencing this condition summons the courage to find treatment, the chances of getting a good recovery may have lowered. To make matters worse, those who have experienced an anxiety attack as more likely to experience them throughout the rest of their life. Eventually, these people develop social anxiety disorders.

The single, most common knowledge for those who are socially anxious is that their fear of being judged and criticized are basically irrational and they are aware that what they think is not true at all. They acknowledged that their thoughts, doubts, and feelings are often exaggerated and irrational. Even with this awareness and despite the fact that they know whats really going on, controlling the thoughts and emotions can be hard and thus continue to feel that way.

Fortunately, social anxiety or social phobia is curable, and treatments are available. Several therapeutic methods has been studied, but cognitive-behavioral therapy is the only method that has been made known to work effectively. In reality, the treatment of social anxiety or social phobia by cognitive-behavioral methods has the capacity to give long-term, permanent relief to patients of this condition. Anyone who suffers from social anxiety or social phobia, and those who feel the symptoms, should be more open about it can consult a doctor in order to be given proper treatment before its too late.
