Trucking Insurance – Driving in Inclement Weather

by Steve Turner on March 23, 2009

Truck operators that are prepared for all kinds of weather and the impact this will in turn have on the roads could prevent the need to file a trucking insurance claim. Most commercial truck drivers have driven in a variety of weather and road conditions. Still they should never underestimate the significance this poor weather will have on the state of the roads and should therefore understand how to respond to these dire circumstances.

Prior to leaving be conscious of the weather conditions through which you will be traveling through. Prepare a different path that you can follow if weather conditions become too hazardous. Talk with other drivers on your CB and listen to weather conditions on the radio to keep yourself informed.

Make sure that your route never passes near a hurricane watch. You should have plenty of time to alter your route since hurricanes approach slowly enough.

Tornados vary from hurricanes in that they are highly unpredictable in their course. Never try to out run a tornado if one comes across your route. Abandon your truck and find shelter for your protection immediately.

During strong wind conditions, be constantly aware of any movement of your trailer. If you find yourself in a thunderstorm remain in your truck. Find a place to park that is away from tall trees and power lines.

Make sure and keep your windows clear when traveling through snow and icy conditions. Be aware that overpasses and bridges will freeze first. Use caution when braking because you will not be able to do so as quickly as normal.

When traveling through fog make sure that you use your low beam headlights and fog lights. Slow down your speed before you enter the fog and be careful for any slow moving or stopped vehicles that may be in front of you. See if using your defroster or windshield wipers will help you to see better than without their use.
