Ever Dream of the Big Sale?

Ever worked on getting that big customer for months, chasing after then, long drives or flights to see them so you can win them over with your service and determination? Then have the worst thing that can happen in a situation like that you get the order and now you have to figure out how you can possibly fill it because the order larger than your total Operating Line of Credit.

That did happen to a Telecommunication Company in New York State, USA. In one order, their sales had increased to over 3 times the size of their entire Line of Credit at their bank. The owner went to the bank to get it increased so they could take on the order but the bank refused to increase their limit.

In this scenario the customer of my client required 30 day terms and the supplier of the goods required payment before they released the good, so you can see the problem. We have a gap of about 40 days including the shipping time. With no financing in place the company was struggling with the possibility of having to refuse the order after all that hard work of trying to get it in the first place.

That is an option, but the owner of the company kept looking for a solution. He ended up speaking with an Accounts Receivable Factoring Company, but they could not help because of the time span as well since they could only fund on open invoices on delivered goods. The goods could not be delivered without payment and he could not get payment at this point without delivering the goods. Quite a predicament.

The owner of the Company was then referred to a Commercial Finance Brokerage who immediately assembled a Purchase Order Finance and Accounts Receivable Factoring facility. Now the order was able to be processed and now the door is open for future orders from and large buyers.

The Buck Stop Here ” The AIG Saga continues to Unfold

President Obama has taken a very strong stance against the abusive nature of the AIG Executives and their willingness to take advantage of the US Taxpayers.

The buck stops with me, Mr. Obama said. And my goal is to make sure that we never put ourselves in this kind of position again.

You can definitely see that anyone that is following the AIG story is very impressed with the Presidents posture on the events and it will be interesting how the events to come unfold.

This money doesnt belong to A.I.G., said Representative Steve Israel, Democrat of New York. It belongs to the American taxpayer and we are going to get it back.

I doubt many of people would disagree with this statement. As a result of the upheaval, the congress is asking for the recipients of the most recent bonuses to pay back half, and apparently there are a number of them that are volunteering to give back 100% of their bonuses which I am really pleased to see.

That being said, the honor system will not likely work to the entire executive group, since they were the ones that put AIG in the position it is in now. Congress is taking Mr. Obamas direction to heart by heading to the House to prepare a plan to tax the people that did receive the bonuses and did not return them to the point that they may as well have given it back in the first place.

So far, the names of the AIG Executives have not been released as Mr. Liddy feels a responsibility to protect them for the moment as there have been graphic death threats to them and the last thing we need is for this to turn into a hit list. While I expressly agree that the AIG Executives should give the bonuses back, we can not go around killing them over this.

While the AIG did take advantage of the situation, there actions were not blocked by the people that put the package together in the first place. We need to formulate a plan to fix this and ensure it does not happen again.

When I look over the problems we find ourselves in currently I can not help but expect that the deal was funded in too much of a rush without the proper provisions to compensate for the rushed manner the bailout was entered into. Normally when a Corporation goes for a loan there are several underwriting criteria that must be met prior to funding. Since the US Government is now in the Commercial Loan business they need to be sure to have the appropriate structures in place when underwriting these loans to protect their and our interests. There is a high likelihood that there will be more bailouts in the future and the correct foundation needs to be set out now. We have already seen what has happened to the sub-prime mortgage business and this is very much a sub-prime loan.

A local election could be of many types.The state elections are the commonest in USA.In electing a mayor there could be no other better method than a local election .The state votes are considered the base unit for the presidential election of the united states . By getting the local votes as one unit it has proved success that always the better person comes as the winner in USA. It gives more respect to all kinds of people regardless of their density compared with the whole population.

In United Kingdom however local elections became a landmark allowing even 18-20 years to also be a candidate for council seats. The most common local elections held in UK are the council elections. Internet and telephone voting were common in getting the local election results . With the results it was obvious that in almost all the districts the councils have achieved a different result to the overall general elections and hence regarded as a giving more authority on the people living in the area to choose their councilors.

The most important aspects in middle east being water and power it is being given authority to the local governing authorities to handle the matters. This way the concepts and ideas from higher levels could be passed down and practiced in the lower level.

The Ancient History of Barry, South Wales: Part Two

In the 18th. Century evidence of Neolithic man was discovered in the form of dishes, saws, knives, flints, a scraper, a prehistoric horn celt with obscure markings, a spokeshave and some arrowheads, amongst other things. Unfortunately, although these things reside safely in the Museum of Cardiff, no one thought it worth excavating at the time and now residences stand on the sites.

An ancient Roman kitchen, complete with remains and utensils underwent a similar fate. In 1533, Leland was made the Kings Antiquary and was directed to make a tour of all places where records were held. This took him nine years and his description of the island was:

“It is about a mile in circumference and has good corn, grass and some wood, and there is no dwelling on the Island, but in the midst of it is a fair little Chapel of St. Baruch which is visited by many pilgrims. It took the name Barri from this holy man who was buried there and whose remains are yet on the Island”. (The Welsh name for Barry is Y Barri).

Vikings raided the coastline of south Wales in the Tenth Century often taking hostages from the monasteries, but they did not seek to settle the area. The island was known as the ‘Saints’ Retreat’ or the ‘Island of Saints’ for a long time. Later, in the Sixteenth Century, the island was used by smugglers and pirates and was known locally as the ‘Smugglers’ Fortress’. This occurred at the same time as Bristol, Britain’s second largest port, was growing rapidly.

Barry Island soon became the centre of piracy and smuggling in the Bristol Channel. In 1784, the island became known as the “Fortress of Knight”. Knight was the most prolific pirate and smuggler in the channel and people were to terrified to speak out in court against him., although he was also considered a bit of a local hero. His armed ship was called ‘John O’ Combe’. He was eventually forced out to Lundy, which he also fortified. He and his successor, Arthur, returned to Barry so frequently that H.M. Customs asked the government to station a cutter in Penarth and 60 troops to Barry.

The small seaside village of Rhoose, five miles from Barry, was so well-known for its wreckers that George II sent troops to break up them up. They landed at Aberthaw, just up the coast a bit further, “the Rhoose men’s favourite landing zone, from where they could easily transport the contraband along Port Road to Cardiff, the main market for such things”. While digging out for the docks at Barry in the late nineteenth century, several large caves were filled in. They had probably been used by the pirates who were moved on in about 1850.

Examining War

Throughout the history of mankind, there have been wars. Times of peace, although the preference of most people, seem to exist all too briefly. Prior to the Industrial Age, war was much less sophisticated, in terms of weaponry. War was fought on specified battle grounds, with much conducted in hand-to-hand combat. Civilians were not injured. In even the most ferocious of campaigns, the casualties sustained were nothing like modern warfare.

Today, civilians are fair game in war, acquiring the cold hearted moniker of ‘collateral damage’. Weaponry may be fired from hundreds or even thousands of miles away. Weapons used in modern warfare are not confined to bullets and ordinary bombs. Lethal gases, cluster bombs, depleted uranium and biological weapons are now a matter of course. Such weapons are indiscriminate, killing innocent men, women and children simply because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. How is it that we, as citizens of the world, have come to accept such appalling conditions as the standard operating procedure in times of war?

If the issue of war and peace were put to a vote of all of the citizens, it’s certain that peace would win by a landslide. Unfortunately, the common man has little to say when heads of state decide to make war on one another. When it comes to a choice between war and peace, those in power stay at home in safety and comfort, while sending young men and women to do the fighting and dying. When Tolstoy wrote his masterpiece, ‘War and Peace’, it would have been unthinkable for the leaders to sit in safety and allow the indiscriminate slaughter we suffer today.

It’s interesting to note that Jimmy Carter once echoed a sentiment expressed in ‘War and Peace’. While Tolstoy wrote, The strongest of all warriors are these two ” time and patience, President Carter is quoted on the subject as follows: “Short-circuiting the long-established principles of patient negotiation leads to war, not peace.”

As for peace, it’s left to small activist groups and musicians to try to ‘Give peace a chance’. When individuals speak out in favor of peace, they are scoffed at shamelessly by those in favor of war and marginalized by those in power.

Perhaps one of the most puzzling aspects of the war and peace issue is that some groups and individuals who adhere to Christianity are sometimes the most vociferous proponents of war. Tolstoy eloquently addressed this, writing, It seems as though mankind has forgotten the laws of its divine Saviour, Who preached love and forgiveness of injuries–and that men attribute the greatest merit to skill in killing one another. It must be asked, how do we, as a Christian nation, justify war at all?

As for leaders of the nations, ‘War and Peace’ contains a statement which they should all debate before opting for war: There is no greatness where there is not simplicity, goodness, and truth. Who can disagree?

High Gas Prices

With gas prices fluctuating as they have over the past year, from the $3 plus range about a year ago, to as much as $4.50 this past summer and now in the $2 price range at the end of the year, it surely makes you wonder why gas prices are high sometimes, but plummet rapidly when the economy is in poor health. It seems a bit suspicious, if you ask me.

Asking why gas prices are high seems to launch a bevy of smoke and mirrors, the traditional red herring. When gas prices went sky high, we heard cries lamenting the ‘fact’ that the world was fast running out of oil. During this same period, the big oil company profits were coming in at $10 billion and more, in a single quarter. Surely these numbers angered the average driver, but we certainly weren’t in control of the pricing. We just had to cough up whatever price was posted on any given day.

Somewhere in this time frame, the public received an additional slap in the face. We were chided at being addicted to oil. Anyone is going to recognize this bait and switch. Now we have a new explanation as to why gas prices are high. It’s our fault because we have no choice but to drive cars that burn this expensive commodity.

This provides the perfect lead in to justify why we must drill for new sources of oil, oil that is known to be in such places as the Alaskan wildlife refuge. Wait. Hold the phone. An earlier explanation of why gas prices are high clearly stated that the world was running out of oil, and fast!

The media soon began running segments trying to determine just what the real reason was. Reporters quizzed oil company executives, government officials and gas station owners, attempting to get at the truth. The oil companies claimed that hurricane damage had cost them tremendous sums of money to rebuild oil rigs in their valiant efforts to continue to supply America with oil, to fuel cars and homes. Government officials claimed that our oil reserves were low, while pointing the finger at OPEC as the real reason why gas prices are high. Gas station owners unanimously agreed that it wasn’t their fault. Oil companies set the prices and their profits amounted to pennies on the gallon. Personally, the only story I buy is that of the gas station owners. It is a fact that they make pennies on the gallon.

This all still leaves us in the dark as to why gas prices are high. OPEC apparently adjusts production according to demand. It’s not for a lack of product. During the past summer’s peak in prices, people were strapped to the max. Hardly anyone filled their tank, buying just enough to get them to work and back until pay day. If it’s a question of supply and demand, why was the supply restricted? Citizens took their ‘oil addiction’ to heart, reducing their driving to the absolute minimum. Now, in the cold months, demands for heating should logically bring an increased cost.

Some news stations are now speculating gas prices will soon be at a modest $1 per gallon soon. This is why the question of why gas prices are high remains one of the great mysteries of the modern day. Hey, let’s get those green energy sources going, full steam ahead! Enough is enough!

Finally, the U.S. Presidential campaign is over. We’ve elected a new President, who will, hopefully, bring to fruition the changes everyone has been looking for, all across the board, from a better and more stable economy to improved foreign relations. Most Americans realize that the new President is inheriting a rather full plate.

Who, in their right mind, would want to tackle the problems we now face? You’ve got to feel grateful that someone is willing to shoulder these massive problems. You hope that the new President will be effective. Change is the platform upon which our new President ran. The fact remains that our U.S. political news is now world news. In the past, the transition of power between one administration and the next has been smooth and seamless. This time, this process seems to be happening rapidly, long before the actual inauguration – and the world is listening and watching closely. U.S. political news is a hot topic, around the world.

Economic chaos, food shortages, environmental crises and war has put the world on alert. Many nations are blaming the U.S. for the many crises we now face. It’s no wonder that the world continues to pay close attention to the U.S. political news.

President-elect Obama has stated that he intends to take immediate steps to stabilize the economy here at home, as well as developing a plan to create 2.5 million new jobs, primarily in alternative energy, or green, jobs. He’s also said that he will have a stimulus package proposal which he’ll present to Congress on his first day in office. He’s already chosen his team of economic advisers, charged with determining how best to invest and manage the multi-trillion dollar funding required to straighten out the foreclosures, credit markets and auto manufacturer’s currently bleak outlook.

Abroad, another issue in the U.S. political news is making headlines. That is the choice of the new Secretary of State. This person, under the direction of the President, will be helping to shape foreign policy, currently in shambles, with foreign relations in a dire state, with certain countries, formerly allies, now uncertain as to where they stand in the whole scheme of world politics.

For example, Afghanistan is calling for a drawing down of the U.S. presence there, while Pakistan and India are becoming less stable, with violence coming from new and previously unknown militant groups. The question of Iran has not been addressed. Russia no longer has a good rapport with the U.S., incited by the recent agreement with Czechoslovakia to build a missile defense installation on Russia’s western borders. North Korea is again exhibiting instability and the health of Kim Jong-Il creates even more concerns.

Historically, America has been admired throughout the world, for both its generosity in helping other nations, as well as its stabilizing influence in world affairs. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. We need to restore our reputation and credibility, throughout the world. We must also address the economic fallout we are all experiencing and being felt around the world.

It’s clear that U.S. political news will remain in the spotlight for some time to come. Yes, this new President has much to do to effect change that really makes a positive difference in the coming years. It can’t happen too soon.
