Her big brown eyes open impossibly wide as you hear, ‘Oh Mommy can we please, please keep him?’ The object of your daughter’s desire is an eight week old Welsh Pembroke Corgi which your next door neighbor has so generously offered to your daughter. You relent. But with your approval comes a serious request: ‘Potty training for puppies is very important and you will have to agree to help.’ Your daughter is thrilled and you now have a dog that needs to be housebroken.

There are a few approaches to housebreaking your new puppy. One way is to use newspapers or pretreated pads. The advantage of pads is that they are infused with a chemical whose scent draws your puppy to use them. As soon as you see your dog either continuously sniffing the floor or walking around in circles, pick him up without saying anything and bring them over to the pad or newspaper. Lavish him with praise if he goes to the bathroom. If your dog is consistently successful using the papers, start moving them closer to the door and then ultimately to out of doors.

Another approach is crate training. The idea is that the crate will become the puppy’s bed. He will not want to pee or poop where he sleeps. Before you put the puppy in the crate, take him outside to potty. Take him outside again as soon as he leaves his crate. Crate training will teach dogs not to go inside. It will also teach them that they can hold their urges to go. Most dogs can hold in their potty for up to 7 hours.

Another good method is simple supervision. This is time consuming but is fine for people who are at home most of the time anyhow. With this technique, the owner keeps a watchful eye on the puppy, always looking for any signs that the dog is ready to go out. As soon as you see such signs, take him outside right away. After he is finished going, give him praise and come back in. Do not play with him on potty visits, as the dog needs to know that the only reason he went out was to go to the bathroom.

Always keep in mind that these are puppies and they will occasionally have accidents. Though you may be frustrated, it does no good to reprimand pups for accidents if you do not witness them. Dogs will not be able to equate the scolding with the accidents and they will only get confused. If you do see the inappropriate potty taking place, sternly say ‘No’ and pick the dog up and carry her outside or to her pads. If she completes her business in the right spot, praise her.

Getting the whole family on board with whatever housebreaking technique will make the process less stressful for any one individual and provide the dog a consistent potty training message. Involving your children teaches them responsibility and advances the bonding process with the dog.

Family vacations can pose a problem to training by interrupting, and perhaps undoing, what your dog has learned. One of the best ways to eliminate this possibility is to engage the services of a pet sitter. They can continue uninterrupted the housebreaking program you’ve begun.

Bringing a new puppy into your home will provide both of you with a lifetime of love and camaraderie. By ensuring proper bathroom habits early, you will suffer less stress and be able to fully enjoy your new friend.

You understand that potty training for puppies is important to take control of early and inform your children that they must agree to assist.
Commonly, particularly in small spaces, male dogs are claimed by some dog owners to be more aggressive and destructive. Female dogs, or ‘bitches’ are said to be easier to train and more loving. Dependent the dog type, these stereotypes may be true or not. There are lots of things that you should be aware of when you want to choose a female dog such as the need to spay so that unwanted birth will be avoided or simply manage your dog during the times of being in heat. Failure to take action for doggy birth control means that you’re constantly trying to find homes for cute litters of puppies.

You should know that the change of life is not something that female dogs have, thus, it is possible for female dogs to have pups whenever they want to, not like with the human female that has a lot of issues to deal with first. Guarding your female dog is an activity that you are expected to do for weeks in every year because male dogs either from your neighbor or those stray ones can catch her scent no matter how far they are. On the other hand, if you have a pedigree dog that you want to breed, then having a female dog can become a financial advantage.

To mark their territorial dominion, which be from the outside of your home or even just around the corners of your room is something that male dogs can’t really avoid doing. They do the marking of their “spot” by peeing on that part so that they won’t have the trouble finding it again. You can try to train a dog not to mark his territorial dominion, but you’re asking him to go against his instincts. If you already have a male dog in your house and you have add another, then a fight on who becomes the boss is likely to be witnessed between those dogs. The dominance over the home is something that even the smaller dogs would fight for against the larger male dogs in order to insist who among them got there first.

Just like with humans where opposites attract, the same goes with dogs of different genders. Although male dogs seem to be more malicious with each other than female dogs, sharing their place with another dog is not something that some female dogs would love to do. Female dogs are by and large easier to house school than male dogs, although that is not usually applicable in all cases since each and every breed has its own distinct features so it may still vary and that will also depend on the ability of the dog trainer on how well he could control the dogs. Male dogs are considered as more lively and active, but, there are certain breeds with both their males and females possessing the nature of being “high strung”. Many of the average individuals who are shopping for a dog would definitely look for a female dog. The idea that those dogs which are easier to school and less hostile are the female ones is more likely to be the thought that they think in.

But, being highly temperamental is a fact with most female dogs that those people tend to forget. Dog breeders tend to favor male dogs as an easier pet to handle. In determining how a dog will behave, depending on the essence of what the sex can tell you with regards to its characteristics is not enough to give you the facts you need. There are breeds that set aside the sex since some of their features are likely to be retained such as being calm and tolerant whether the dog is a female or a male. But males and females of breeds which are energetic, nippy and difficult to manage usually have those characteristics within them.

Given that no scientific evidence is presented that can make the guessing of the features of males and females and comparison for each gender possible, then the decision about dog sex is essentially subjective. Chances are your memories of a childhood pet or a friend’s pet that you wish you had is what’s determining your choice now.

You can recall of a gentle female Collie who once had cared enough for each and every litters of pups and that you may consider as the trait of an ideal dog to have. Or you think about the rough and tumble large male dog that could run hard, play tirelessly and keep up with the most inquisitive children. It would be fine to follow your instincts in making the decision of picking out what dog is best for you to have that could either be a female or a male dog. For you, that will be the right choice.

Is there any such thing as a naturally bad dog? Mostly it is a bad handler. It really gets on your nerves when a dog jumps up to soil whatever you are wearing. The dog next door might also prefer to leave his calling cards on your front yard. Would you like to call them bad dogs? They are as bad as the children next door who are out of control.

How can you blame the pups or kids when the adults are not behaving responsibly? Ask any good owner and he would admit that taking the help of a dog trainer is the best way to understanding dog handling without hampering his spirits. Either you contact your vet office or pet store to get to meet a trainer or seek online help and tackle your pet problem before it goes out of hand.

This training could teach owners how to be in command of their pets. Trainers often mention however, that owners are more difficult to teach when it comes to dog training. If you want to leash train your dog, you need to make him become accustomed to it in a familiar area.

It is important to remember that shouting or punishing them for barking usually has the opposite affect since this is the only way they can speak to us. Often, dogs bark because they lack attention or need food and water. Remember burglars get scared when a dog barks; remember this the next time you punish him for barking because it may not be a wise decision. Remember not to promote barking when he is a puppy and then get all worked up when he continues to bark even more as he gets bigger.

Trainers teach you how to promote the behavior you prefer by praising your pet and giving them the occasional treat. Once your pet is rewarded regularly for good behavior they will begin to stop displaying the negative traits. Most important to note: you can not expect a dog to learn certain behaviors which are against his genetic behavioral pattern.

You can not teach a dog some behavioral pattern which contradicts his natural breed. To make your pet follow specific behavioral training, you ought to choose one from a breed with can give you what you need. For a dog to be well-trained, you require affection, tolerance and dedication.

by Angee Bart

Training and cat are seldom used in the same sentence. Most people think that cats are incapable of being trained.

Many cats are incredibly affectionate and loving. They just need you to be the “alpha” and demonstrate your leadership and initiate the rapport-building process.

Certainly many times cats act like loners who seem content on doing their own thing. But they are also playful, loving, and members of the pride.

Sure, cats act aloof, independent, and laid back. They even act like they own the world. If they were human, they would be the ones who believe “It’s all about me.” That is because they seem to do what they want, when they want. Yeah, yeah, that doesn’t strike most people as being ideal training material. Ah, but it is.

More and more people are discovering how fun it is to train their cats in basic and advanced obedience work and tricks (everything from sit, stay, and come, to jumping through hoops, twirling, and high-fiving). The additional reward is their cats enjoy it too.

If you keep your cat’s mind active and stimulated, they will be happy to play and learn. They’re like a two-year old child – don’t tell them its good for them and they’ll enjoy it!

I have always started with easy things that the cat naturally likes to do “reach up with their paws”, “roll over to be petted”, and so on. With rewards and praise, they quickly learn to have fun at this new game and jump at the opportunity to learn more.

Simply put, cats are like children. They enjoy knowing their boundaries and they are more than willing to push them every chance they get. But remember that you are the alpha in this pride and stand firm.

There is no point in waiting till next February to start with cat teeth care, as it is your primary duty to care for your cat oral hygiene. Why February, you may ask? Well The United States American Veterinarian Medicine Association or the AVMA and the American Veterinarian dental Society or the AVDS join forces each February to give this month a different meaning.

These two groups tagged what used to be the passion month as the pet dental Health calendar month ass they both aim and carry out steps in educating cat owners like you about how to care for the oral needs of your pets every 24-hour interval. But these groups know how crucial this is for the pets and their owners. They actually want all those who are caring for any family pets to consider each month as the oral health month for family pets.

Incidentally 85% of all elderly pets have some form of oral problems. This may come to you as news that most cats suffer from this problem, which is considered to one of the most everyday health issues they have, and if you do not pay any heed to these periodontal ailments, you might be in for more serious troubles later. If such conditions will not be properly treated, such may cause harmful elements like bacteria from the oral cavity spreading all through the bloodstream. Gradually this would spread to other organs and eventually lead to death of the cat.

Oral care

Your cat’s teeth need to be cleansed everyday, and you have to take this as your responsibility. This may not be feasible for you to do alone, so get some other family member to open the cats mouth and you can then clean its teeth comfortably. Your cat cat may not find this process very welcoming at the start, but it is meant for his own good. Thus, both of you should try to get familiar with the procedure and for adding a bit of fun and excitement, you could use fish-flavored toothpaste for your cat. You must also have a frequent appointment with your veterinarian regarding the oral health of your family pets. Check whether your cats gum and teeth are clean, and if necessary, use floss to help you with the cleaning job.

You have already supplied a lot for your cat so don’t let it all go to waste. Take care of your cat’s teeth as soon as you have them because you don’t want further complications as they grow old. If you have endured painful teeth, you can imagine what pain the cat must be going through when his teeth have troubles.

When you pay due attention to cat teeth care, you can be sure that your cat would live up to a ripe old age without any health troubles. Ensuring good health for your cat, results in your pets getting older in a nice and healthy way.

It is a strange fact that most pet owners do not bother obtaining pet insurance, These animals are nevertheless, generally considered a part of every family, this is peculiar when they are generally loved like any other person in the home. This is peculiar when the importance of health insurance is regarded very high on the population’s list of priorities, we all know just how important it is to have health insurance, With this being the case, looking after our pets should be equally important.

Thought by many as an unnecessary expense, Until pet owners realize that those trips to the veteran can be very pricy! The cost of taking an animal to the vets has increased enormously during the last decade,Many people have seen their pet insurance rates increase as a consequence.

So other than rising costs, what are the main reasons you should consider cover for your pets. The problem is that domestic animals are often more liable to be involved in an accident or become sick,When this happens, the cost of treatment may even cause fiscal strain.

There may come a time when you have to consider the cost of medical treatment,Obviously this is something you would prefer to avoid especially if it is based on cost.

A few years back, my veterinary told me treatment for our dog would cost more than a thousand dollars, the agony of making a decision like that is something I hope not to repeat. Successful treatment in these instances is never guaranteed,Operations on animals can go wrong often.

If you have a domestic pet, then the cost of maintaining their health is a serious matter,These additional costs can place a person in debt. If you are over-extended at the bank, you may be forced into borrowing money.

If you love your domestic pet, it should have the best treatment you can afford,Arranging a domestic pet insurance policy saves this sort of predicament from occurring in the future. Domestic [pet] healthcare insurance can usually be purchased relatively inexpensively despite recent rises, For around 40 dollars (or Less) per month cost of medical care is assured.

You can select from a range of pet healthcare services, This can even extend to offering multi-domestic pet discounts. If you are a domestic pet owner then perhaps this article has given you something to think about,You may already be giving this subject some serious consideration, perhaps the facts supplied here has made things are a little clearer now and you won’t delay further.

With an aquarium, you can have all the convenience of pet-keeping without much trouble. These are some basic and simple steps to take in order to create a healthy living environment for your marine friends. Some of these measures you will need to carry out on an everyday basis, while other things can be done on a weekly or a biweekly basis. Fortunately, daily care consists of very simple things to do. You have to make it a point to keep observing your fish on a daily basis so that they always look happy and physically fit.

Properly monitor the lighting and filtering arrangements of your fish tank as they can malfunction. Feed the fish daily. Make it a point not to feed your fish anything that they cannot consume in 2-5 minutes. Residual food left after the fish consume what they want will add to the nitrite levels of the tank and will cause illnesses among the fish. Monitor the pH level of the water and note any changes if any. Be very particular about changing things if needed, promptly. You can get the right ph level for your particular type of fish from the pet store where you get your supplies from. They vary amongst fish species.

Maintaining filter hygiene is vital. The aquarium filters will collect all the wastes that the fish produce by way of excretion. The filters will eventually fill with debris and be unable to do their job unless they are cleaned. The filters have another important job to do apart from removing the waste materials from the tank – this is to cycle oxygen within the tank.

In case your filters get congested, the movement of gases in them will also slow down. This can cause a lowering in the amount of oxygen available in your tank. If left untreated, this could be deadly for your fish. Change the filter on the aquarium every two to three weeks depending on need. One indication that tells you that the filters need cleaning is when the water becomes murky or develops bad odor. The kind of filter you are using will decide whether you need to simply clean the filter with water or to replace it entirely.

Go slow when you are changing water in your aquarium. See carefully if you have removed the lights and other arrangements from the fish tank before starting to clean it. Each seven or fifteen days, remove a third of the water from your aquarium and put in fresh water in its place. You can add direct water from the tap if this temperature limitation is maintained. The retailer at the pet store will guide you on the proper kind of water to be used. For some kinds of tap water, a half hour treatment is enough, but for some kinds you may need to go in for an overnight treatment procedure.

Clean the sides of the tank with a scrubber to remove any built up algae. Be careful not to disturb or scare the fish. Move the rocks and other decorations of your tank slightly to allow the debris trapped in them to move out. When replacing the water, try to get this debris out using a small bucket or a vacuum siphon. Regularly pick out the decaying leaves of the plants in your tank. For cleaning the outer area of the fish tank, just sponging the area with a squeegee soaked in tap water will do. Do not forget to clean the cover of the tank, from the inside and the outside. Lastly, plug the aquarium back in, and enjoy the freshly cleaned tank.

A Koi pond is essentially a place to keep your Koi. When just starting out you should keep this simple and not allow other fish access to the pond. A Koi pond should always have the proper ecosystem the fish need. This is the number one priority.

Also, you will want the water chemistry and design if the koi pond to lend well to water clarity and ease of cleaning. While the Japanese Koi can live in water that is green, it is not conducive to a pleasant viewing experience for the owner. You want to be able to view your specimens in your koi pond, right?

You want to have everything in place for your Koi to be healthy and happy. The larger the Koi pond is, the bigger your Koi can grow over time. Other things that are important for proper growth are good aeration of the water.

You should make sure that the proper food is available to the koi fish as well as water that contains no chemicals. Make sure you treat any water that comes from the tap especially, because municipal water usually contains chemicals that are severely harmful to koi fish. These often include chlorine and chloramine. These chemicals are lethal.

Your Koi pond is going to be a great adventure, and once setup the maintenance should be done religiously. The health of your Koi depends on it. Make sure you have a good filter that is rated for the size of your Koi pond. This is very important and people often get a filter that is too small, and they dont clean the filter often enough.

Right now you may be thinking what have I gotten myself into but dont worry, the rewards of having a wonderful looking koi pond with healthy Japanese koi is really worth it. It is really not as hard as it sounds once you have done the hard work of setting up your koi pond.

by Shelly Ballard

If you want to keep your house clean after deciding to adopt a new puppy, you need to insist on puppy house training rules. Each new puppy and its owner needs to work through house training. All puppies are different, some pick up things rather fast and some don’t. It can take a while to see a difference once you start your puppy house training, so don’t get frustrated. Keep being consistent, loving, and patient and your puppy will learn what you want.

In the Puppy’s Mind

Looking into how your puppy thinks will certainly assist you in producing good puppy house training results. Cleanliness has very different definitions when it comes to you versus your new puppy. Puppies do not need the structure of a set place to relieve themselves outside, what they want is the freedom to go where and when they feel the need. Your puppy is only concerned with nature’s basic safety and health rule which is to stay away from his bed or food when going to the toilet. This means that any place else in your house, away from his bed and food, may be considered appropriate, from behind your couch to the floor in your bedroom. Places like this are perfectly fine for him, although definitely not for you; what you must do is instruct him and show him a better spot — one that you choose for him!

Anticipation and the Signs

A puppy doesn’t have a terribly reliable early warning system for the first several weeks, so make sure to sort this out as soon as you can for both your sake. As soon as possible, you should choose a spot in the area where the puppy is plays, eats or usually sleeps. You will find it rewarding to predict when it’s time to take your puppy to go out. Puppies need to relieve themselves frequently particularly after they eat, drink, play or get excited.

You must also learn to read your puppy’s body language and soon you’d realize the tell tale signs that tell you he needs to use the bathroom. Common signs are sniffing around in a persistent manner, circling around a single spot, or holding his tail high. When this happens, all you have to do is get your pup and bring him or her to the appointed toilet area. By doing so, you are well on your way to completing your puppy house training.

For some dogs, even those who are well trained, little accidents still happen when they get excited or when they are being greeted by family members and visitors. This is a natural response called submissive urinations and should not be treated apart from the normal house training. And even with other accidents, you should never chastise your dog. Punishments will only confuse them and make them secretive about going to the toilet.

When accidents happen during periods of excitement, do not shout at your dog, instead work things out until he breaks this habit. Keep greetings low key and preferably do them while you’re both still outside. Build up your dog’s confidence and greet them gently. If they do have an accident, clean it up and don’t make any issue out of it. Soon your dog will no longer be having these accidents and you’ll be congratulating yourself for having successfully completed another round of puppy house training.

Why do some dogs bark so much and how to stop a dog barking, the solutions to both these questions are described in detail in this article. If your dog barks more than you would like, you are not alone. Dog owners report that this is one of the annoying behaviors they encounter, hence knowing how to stop a dog barking is a sought after skill. The first step in stopping a dog barking is to first identify the underlying cause of the barking.

How to Stop a Dog Barking

In a short time we will start to explain how to stop a dog barking, first however it’s important to understand why dogs bark. Attention seeking is one of the most frequent causes of barking. Puppies get attention from their masters at a young age by barking. This trait is often shown in older dogs that have been left alone for long periods of time, that need more exercise, and dogs that are not mentally challenged often enough.

If this is the reason your dog’s barking, start to take action to remedy the problem today. Try to take your dog for a walk once a day where possible. Obedience train your dog a few times each week and play fun interesting games with him. Give him a few new toys so that he can entertain himself when he’s alone. Give your dog some 1 on 1 time every day for at least 5 minutes.

Another common cause of barking is fear. If you dog is afraid of loud noises he may start barking. If this is the case with your dog, put him somewhere he feels safe such as in his crate. Give him a treat of his favorite toy and let him know that everything is ok. Sometimes a radio playing in the background helps to calm the situation.

The last common cause of barking is separation anxiety. Separation anxiety usually affects dogs if they are extremely attached to you or have been through some kind of recent change (such as moved houses, divorce, death in the family etc). If your dog suffers from separation anxiety, you need to slowly show him that you are not going far away and will return. To start doing this, go out of the house and leave your dog inside. Return 1 minute later, if your dog hasn’t barked, give him a treat. Repeat this later on, this time for 5 minutes. Work your way up to a time you are happy with.

If you have tried the methods above and you haven’t managed to stop your dog barking, you could try a Citronella collar. Not everyone is a fan of these collars but they do seem to solve the problem in many cases.
