Burglars and Baby Monitors are Friends?

by Sandy Parker on March 14, 2009

Baby safety monitors are one of the top safety devices used by parents in the home. While every parent of a toddler or baby should have one of these important communication devices, there are many different types of monitor available.

Each of these different baby safety monitors has its own set of features. If you have used baby safety monitors before, you may already know that other electronic devices can interfere with their signals, whether another baby monitor nearby or even a microwave operating in the same home. However, baby monitors have made great advances as of late and they operate with less interference as well as offering video in the case of many models.

Unfortunately a radio signal is used in all baby monitors and if noticed by you others will notice it as well. This means that essentially your house is bugged. This also means millions of people have bugged their own house and a bugged house means others can hear your private conversations.

Unfortunately, this means that criminals are able to tap into these signals and find out when the best time is to invade your home.

Anyone with a pair of headphones and an inexpensive radio scanner can eavesdrop on the signals from a baby safety monitor and find out when no one will be at home. This presents a security risk to families.

Burglary is a risk that we all face and being the victim of this crime can leave you feeling helpless and violated. Burglars have it pretty easy when there are unsecured electronic communications devices like cordless phones and baby monitors in use in a home. They case homes, watching for the comings and goings of the occupants and may also listen in on baby monitors and phone conversations. Once they have found an easy target, they will strike.

At my company, we have a radio scanner which is used to monitor the dispatchers. While setting it to the proper frequency, I found that I was able to listen in on neighboring homes’ cordless phones and baby monitors!

I had learned things I never intended to know in the course of setting up this radio scanner; things that if I were a burglar, would prove to be very valuable information indeed.

Whether you choose an older baby safety monitor or one of the far more sophisticated newer models of monitor, you are introducing a security risk. People can listen in on your baby safety monitor, even several blocks away! So what is a parent to do? Obviously, not using baby monitors at all is not an option. However, you need to be aware that others may be listening in, so never divulge important information within earshot of your baby monitor and be sure to turn it off when you do not absolutely need it.

There is good news though. The best performing digital technology in baby safety monitors is offered and available today. Two-way communication and video monitoring are some of the features. Digital monitors scramble signals transmitted between monitor and receiver. This make it difficult or impossible for other to hear your conversations. You can ensure your child’s safety and best of all, without compromising your privacy.
