A Guide to Buying a Propane Heater

by Peter J Hurtz on March 24, 2009

The type of heater you buy requires careful consideration. There are gas, propane, wood, coal and electricity heaters and they all come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Propane gas heaters have been growing in popularity in recent times mainly due to their environmentally friendly characteristics and the cheap fuel required to run them.

There are many different types of propane heaters available to buy. All the various types need a source of pressurized gas to work. This usually comes in the form of a gas cylinder which you can fill up at various places including petrol stations.

The most common place a propane heater is used is on a deck or lawn. This makes them ideal for special celebrations that might occur outside during the colder months such as wedding, birthdays and reunions. You can also find propane heaters in indoor settings which can get extremely cold such as garages or basements.

You will discover all sorts of heaters from a wide selection of brands. Whether you require a tall or short version, mounted or portable you will find one that fits your heating needs. Most people choose the portable versions but mounted ones are ideal when you need a heater fixed in place.

The portable versions will have wheels to help you move it around the home or patio. Radiant or convection heaters are best to be used in smaller spaces. The taller versions are ideal for large crowds and usually have a hood to direct the heat downwards.

Some versions come with a fan blower which circulates the hot air around the space or room. These types of heaters will require an electrical socket where you can plug in the blower. A mounted heater will require a vent to the outside where it can bring in the air needed to work.

A mounted propane heater will need to be installed properly. You should check with your local authorities for regulation or safety restrictions you will need to follow. If you are not a handy man at heart then it is probably best to have a professional install the heater for you.

Propane heaters can be bought from a wide range of suppliers, most notably home and garden centers, and heating stores. You can also try your luck online.
